Competency 1


[HOME]


1.1         State basic trainee/employee responsibilities.

1.     Obey all safety rules and regulations.

2.     Utilise all safety equipment provided for the job.

3.      Report any accident or injury.

4.      Follow the instructions of the responsible officer.


1.2                         State the meaning of:

(i)    Safe (in security) workshop practices.

                   Look out for hazards (danger) and take maximum precautions while working in the workshop.



              (ii) safety first.

          Think safety before starting any work. Remember to take all safety precautions.

1.3 List the sources of hazards in the workshop.

Ä Electrical hazards

1.     Broken accessories.
2.     Bare or damaged electrical wires.                                                                                                                                                                             
Ä Fire hazards
1.     Hot soldering iron
2.     Flammable substances
3.     Hot metal pieces
4.     Loose connections
Ä Chemical hazards
1.     Toxic substances( from molten solder while soldering)
2.     Corrosive substances( e.g. acid)
Ä Other hazards
1.     Wet or greasy floor
2.     Defects in equipment
3.     Obstruction in passage
4.     Lack of lighting
5.     Moving parts of machines

1.4 State the importance of observing safety precautions at all times in the workshop 
It is important to observe safety precautions at all times in workshop so as:

1.      To avoid accident and injury to oneself and others.
2.      To avoid damage to tools and equipment.

1.6                      List the requirements related to: -
(i)          General safety in the workshop
Ä Any visible hazard must be notified.
Ä All safety equipment must be in good working condition
Ä Safety precautions in handling tools & equipment.
Ä Machine guards should be kept in place
Ä Keep the workshop clean and tidy (floor should be dry)
Ä Be alert.
Ä Follow instructions and safety signs.
Ä Be aware of the hazards in the workshop.
Ä Check status of equipment and tools before starting of work.
(i)  Personal safety
1.      Safety rules and regulations must be observed.
2.     Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn.
3.     Proper handling of tools.
4.     Jewellery (chains, bracelets, rings, watches etc) must be removed.
1.7                        Read and interpret safety signs and posters found in the workshop


Types of Safety Sign
There are five main types of safety sign which denote different aspects of health and safety in the workplace. They are:
Prohibition - "Stop!"
Colour:
A red circular band with a diagonal cross bar on a white background; the symbol within the circle to be black.
Purpose:
To indicate that a certain behaviour is prohibited.
Meaning:
Stop | Do not | You must not



Hazard - "Danger"
Colour:
A yellow triangle with a black border and black symbol.
Purpose:
To warn of any type of hazard.
Meaning:
Danger | Hazard | Caution | Beware | Careful

Mandatory - "Obey"
Colour:
A blue circle with a white symbol.
Purpose:
Indicates that a specific course of action must be taken.
Meaning: Obey | You must | Carry out instructions shown | Do



Fire Equipment - "Fire"
Colour: A red oblong or square with a white symbol.
Purpose: To describe the location of firefighting equipment.
Meaning: Location of fire-fighting equipment | Type of fire-fighting equipment

Safe Condition - "Safety"
Colour:
A green oblong or square with a white symbol or text.
Purpose:
To provide information about safe conditions.
Meaning:
The safe way | Where to go in emergencies | First aid


1.8 List the types of fire that can occur in the workshop and state the methods of extinguishing each.
Ø Methods of extinguishing each class of fire.
v Class A - Water extinguishers
v Class B - Foam extinguishers(mousse)
v Class C - Gas (Carbon dioxide) extinguishers(Powder)

1.9  List the steps to be taken in case of: -
(i)    injury
o   Inform supervisor
o   Provide first-aid care for minor injuries.
o   Call ambulance (SAMU tel:114) if serious.
(ii    Fire
o   For small fire, use fire extinguisher. Else
o   Sound alarm
o   Evacuate the building to assembly point. 
      o      Fight fire and Call fire brigade (tel:115) if need arises.
v Electric shock
To remove a person from electric shock.
Situation I
o   Switch off power supply.
o   Remove person.
o   Provide first-aid care and call an ambulance (Samu: 114).
     Situation II (main switch is inaccessible) Refer 2.9
o   Use a non-conducting rod to remove person from the defective equipment or power source.
o   Provide first-aid care and call an ambulance (Samu:114). 

 v Burno     
                 Cool injured area under tap water.
o                      Inform person in charge
o                      Provide first-aid care.
o                      Call ambulance if severe.

1.10 State the meaning and list the safe use of
     (i) Hand tools
      Hand tool ð tool operated by hand. E.g. Screwdriver, pliers, measuring tape, etc.
v Safe use of hand tools.
Ø Never play with hand tools.
Ø Do not carry too many tools at once.
Ø Do not use damaged hand tools.
  
(ii) Power tools
      Power tool ð tool that uses electricity, compressed air
  or hydraulic oil.  E.g. drilling machine.
o   Do not  operate power tool with wet hands.
o   Never touch moving part of power tool.
o   Switch off power tool after use, during cleaning and maintenance.
(iii) Stationary equipment
      Stationary equipment ð equipment that is not portable. E.g. bench drill
v Safe use of stationary equipment.
o   Keep machine guards in place
o   Switch off after use
